Trail in the Park: Discover the Hidden History of the River Leven — and Help Shape Its Future

  17-Jul-2025 |   A Habeshaw

Trail in the Park:

When: August 16  2025
Time: 11am – 3pm
Where: River Park at Levenmouth
Why go: Free and open to all

The River Leven has many stories to tell and this summer, we’re inviting you to uncover them with us. On August 16th we’re launching the River Parks Programme in a big way, with Trail in the Park: a free, family-friendly event full of hands-on discovery, local stories, and interactive archaeology.

Set on the banks of the River Leven, in what will become the River Park, this event will be all about exploration — not just of the landscape, but of the lives, legacies, and hidden histories that shaped it. A pop-up heritage trail will guide visitors through three themed stations, each focused on a different part of the river’s past:

🔹 Ashgrove – the prehistoric world of early settlers and ancient burials
🔹 Methil Mill – the medieval and early modern roots of Methil
🔹 Methilhill Brea – the industrial history that transformed the landscape

Each stop on the trail features something different: old maps and photographs, fascinating artefacts, creative activities like prehistoric pottery-making, and a chance to design your own archaeology badge (yes — you can collect all three!). There will even be opportunities to contribute your own memories and ideas for future heritage investigations along the river.

The event isn’t just about looking back — it’s also about looking forward. This event marks the official launch of the River Parks Programme, a three-year initiative dedicated to exploring, celebrating, and protecting the natural and cultural heritage of the River Leven with the community at its heart.

We’re working in partnership with Archaeology Scotland and other local organisations to make sure this programme is rooted in the voices and interests of the people who know this landscape best — and Trail in the Park is your first opportunity to get involved.

“We’re incredibly excited to begin delivering the River Parks Programme — and what better way to start than by bringing people together to explore the rich heritage of the Levenmouth area. Having archaeologists working hand-in-hand with the community is at the heart of this project. Together, we’ll uncover the hidden stories that lie beneath our feet and build a deeper connection to the land, the river, and the people who’ve shaped it through time,” said Helen McCafferty River Park Programme Project Manager.

Phil Richardson, Archaeologist from Archaeology Scotland said: “It’s always thrilling to dig into the past — but doing it in a place like the River Park, with such a diverse and layered history, makes it even more exciting. We’re really looking forward to working alongside local people and enthusiasts to see what the earth reveals. Whether it’s ancient artefacts, forgotten stories, or unexpected discoveries, archaeology here is about revealing the past together — and that’s what makes it truly special.”

Whether you’re a local history buff, a family looking for a fun weekend outing, or someone who simply loves the River Leven, we hope you’ll join us to explore the trail, meet the team, and be part of this exciting journey from past to future.
