Methil Mill

Methil Mill

Led by Archaeology Scotland

The River Leven and its surrounding environment is rich in various forms of heritage covering its industrial history, the social and cultural heritage associated with this and the natural heritage which has evolved through time.

There’s currently a complete lack of physical evidence of this landscape’s history of the milling and manufacturing industries along the river which these communities worked in and grew around.

What does this project involve?

Following successful engagement with local history enthusiasts and participatory excavation events, this project plans to uncover the historic Methil Mill. This will involve community participation through each part of the process, including:

  • Seven community walkover and codesign days, resulting in the project design.
  • Community archaeological excavations.
  • Consolidation and display of the ruins.
  • Production of technical reports and post-excavation analysis, reporting and archiving.
  • There’s also the potential for two 10-day skills development programmes for 10 participants on each.

Participatory excavations during the development phase

This will see three structures within the Mill complex be uncovered and consolidated, leaving behind a historically significant space for community learning and enjoyment.
